What We Accept
-
Almost anything with a plug! Computers, laptops, tablets, phones, printers, AV equipment, wires, and so much more. See our full list of Accepted Items >
At this time we legally can’t accept loose batteries, TV’s, large household appliances (including microwaves) or items containing freon (like AC’s, fridges, or dehumidifiers) Those items require special processing that we are not equipped to handle. See our list of Unaccepted Items > -
At this time we legally can’t accept loose batteries, lightbulbs (even LED), TV’s, large household appliances (including microwaves) or items containing freon (like AC’s, fridges, or dehumidifiers) Those items require special processing that we are not equipped to handle. See our list of Unaccepted Items >
But we want to help you how we can:

Best Buy currently accepts TVs! Find a location > -
Unfortunately these all contain highly toxic materials and are regulated differently than regular electronics. They don’t fall into our free recycling model as we would need to pay a specialized facility to safely dispose of them. Instead of paying us, we recommend using the free resources available to safely dispose of these items:

Of course! If it’s HIPAA-cleared and non-hazardous (no mercury, freon or liquids) we are happy to help you safely retire them. Reach out and we’ll help you assess what’s eligible.
-
Yes. Whether it works or not, we’ll evaluate if it can be reused or responsibly dismantled.
-
Even better! We prioritize reuse and can safely clean, debrand, and give your equipment a second life. The working items we receive help power our TechbackGiveback program and we do our best to find them a safe home.
-
Just ask. We’ll let you know quickly, and work to help you find the right place if it’s not us.
Drop-Offs
-
Not if you’re an individual! Stop by any time Wednesday-Friday from 8am-3pm and Saturday from 11am-2pm and follow signs to the back of our building. There will be two dedicated parking spots next to our easy access bins. If you need assistance, come to our lobby and we’ll be happy to help.
If you are a business client who requires documentation, then the process is similar to our Free Business Pick-Ups. Fill out our request form and note when you would like to arrive and we’ll contact you from there. -
Every item we receive is responsibly recycled with R2-Certified Partners (the highest standard in electronics recycling) or securely wiped and reused. Nothing recyclable ends up in a landfill, ever.
-
Great question! We take data really seriously and follow the strictest security protocols: If it holds data, we destroy it. That means full data wiping or physical destruction even if it’s “already broken”. Fortune 500 company trust us with their secure data and your items will get the same level of care. You can rest easy knowing your secrets are safe (and then gone forever).
-
No need, whether you do or not we will do it again! We take data security seriously and have professionals that make sure all tech is free of personal information whether the item works or not.
-
No limit, no charge. Bring it on.
-
It happens! We recommend making more than one trip; it’s the best option for the planet. It’s rare but you may qualify for a free pick-up based on quantity or location. Fill out our pick-up request form and make sure to write “home pick-up” in the “anything else?” field. And double check that what you have is actually recyclable here>
-
We’re into it. We specialize in bulk pickups and asset management for businesses. Fill out our Pick-Up Request Form and we’ll customize a plan that works for you.
-
Please do. We love a good mystery tangle. Even if you’re not sure what it is anymore, chances are we can recycle it.
-
Please don’t! We ask that you place items in the bin carefully and one-by-one; broken glass can be dangerous and items that bend can be impossible to safely dismantle and recycle. We ask that you treat your electronics with care so we can too.
-
Unfortunately no, we are unable to recycle TV’s. We recommend taking your TV to Best Buy who currently accepts them for free. Find a Best Buy Location & double check what we can and can’t accept >
Pick-Ups
-
Yes, if it makes sense for the planet. We’re an environmental company first and foremost, so sending a TechBack truck across town for one broken printer just isn’t sustainable. But if you're in our service zone and we can group your pickup with others nearby, it’s on us!
-
We offer regularly scheduled free pickups in Syracuse and we’re growing. If you’re in another area we can still arrange a pickup, though a nominal service fee may apply. We also offer long-distance or rush pickups.
We’re currently working to expand our free pickup service across the Finger Lakes to Ithaca, Utica, Rochester, and surrounding areas because every business should have access to secure electronics recycling. In the meantime, we can still arrange service outside our core routes for a small fee.
-
We can still help! If your business is outside one of our regular pickup routes, we may need to charge a small service fee to cover the additional travel and time involved.
These fees are typically based on distance and logistics, and most companies find them very reasonable compared to traditional electronics recycling services.
In some cases, pickup fees can be reduced or even waived depending on the quantity or type of equipment being recycled.
The best way to find out is simply to submit a Pick-Up Request Form and tell us what you have. Our team will review the details and let you know the best option.
-
Just fill out our Pick-Up Request Form and our team will confirm within 48 hours and help match you to one of our routes. We’ll take it from there (it’s called a Hassle-Free Pick-Up for a reason!)
-
Yes! We work with many clients on a recurring schedule, monthly, quarterly, or whatever suits your needs. We can even leave secure collection bins on-site for easy ongoing recycling. Let us know what works best, and we’ll build a custom plan around your workflow.
-
Yes! At the time of collection, we’ll issue a Chain of Custody Transfer Form documenting the handoff with details of your pick-up. From there, your equipment travels under strict chain-of-custody protocol to our secure facility. You’ll receive a Safe Arrival Confirmation once it’s logged. Followed by your documentation package, including serialized Certificates of Data Destruction and Zero-Landfill Recycling after processing.
-
Every pickup includes a Transfer of Custody with a basic inventory summary based on the information submitted in your Pick-Up Request Form. Once your items are processed, you’ll also receive a Certificate of Data Destruction listing the serial numbers of any hard drives destroyed.
For clients who require more detailed documentation, we offer premium asset tracking services, such as fully itemized asset lists, mapped serial numbers, asset tag logging, and other custom categorization or reporting.
These services can be added upon request for an additional fee and are ideal for organizations with strict compliance, inventory management, or audit requirements.
-
We love working with small businesses. TechBack was built to make responsible recycling and top-tier data destruction accessible to everyone.
While every situation is different and we have no hard minimums we do try to encourage pick-ups with 25 items or more. That being said, if you are a little flexible with timing so we can sometimes combine your pickup with others nearby. That way, we keep your service free and protect the planet.
If you have fewer items, we encourage you to drop items off directly at our facility. You’ll still receive the same secure chain of custody, certified data destruction, and a tree planted for every device recycled.
-
Bulk pickups can be scheduled just like small ones, directly through our Pick-Up Request Form. We’re able to work with schools, medical centers, insurance companies, nonprofits, and corporations, creating custom plans for each organization such as dedicated collection bins and scheduled pickup cycles.
That form is just to get things started, we’ll work with you one-on-one from there to design a recycling plan that fits your operations.
-
You may still qualify for a free business pickup, even if you’re not in one of our core service areas. Fill out our Pick-Up Request Form and we’ll review the details and see what we can arrange.
-
Nope, we just ask that you collect it all in one area. Our fully-insured team will log, pack, and secure your electronics onsite. That said, if you prefer to pre-palletize we’ll love you for it. Just mark your items as palletized on your Pick-Up Request Form.
-
Before pick-up day we ask that you please move all of your electronics to one room or zone. You’ll see that we request photographs on our Pick-Up Request Form; this helps our team arrive on site with everything they need to quickly secure your assets.
We know (and encourage!) things to pile up in the days leading up to our arrival so it’s best to have a dedicated area on site where that can happen. -
Yes! In fact we encourage businesses to do this for their employees and will even work with you to organize your own internal drive. We will check in with you the day before our pick up to confirm what has changed and any additional assets our team needs to account for
-
We follow strict, documented HIPPA compliant protocols modeled after NAID standards, ensuring your sensitive data and devices are protected every step of the way:
At pickup, we issue a Chain of Custody Transfer Form documenting the handoff, with item descriptions, timestamps, and release signatures.
Devices are sealed on-site, then transported by our fully insured team following secured route protocols.
Upon arrival at our access-controlled facility, items are logged into our internal system, where they remain in our secure ITAD room until processing.
Destruction is carried out in accordance with R2-certified downstream recycling standards, and a Certificate of Destruction is issued for each serialized drive, detailing the method, date, and outcome.
Every transfer is logged. Every movement is traceable. Every client big and small gets the same level of protection used by the biggest enterprise and government ITAD vendors.
-
No! Asset tag removal or debranding is one of the steps we take to ensure full data destruction for all of our clients. But if you would love to help please do! It gives us more time to help more people safely recycle their electronics.
-
No problem at all. We’re fully insured and happy to provide a COI to meet your building’s requirements. Just let us know when you submit your pick-up request form, and we’ll coordinate the details.
If your building has a specific template or needs to be listed as a certificate holder or additional insured, please upload those instructions; we’re used to working with property managers and can have the COI ready in advance or bring it on the day of service. Need our insurance info to get pre-approved? We’re happy to send that over too. We've got you (and your building) covered. -
Let us know! We offer premium options for off-hours, rush pickups, and long-distance hauls. We’ll always do our best to meet your needs, just note that these services carry a small fee to help cover the additional coordination and sustainability measures involved in going the extra mile (literally).
-
Yes! We’re open for drop-offs Tuesday-Friday from 8am-3pm and Saturday from 11am-2pm but may be able to accommodate your schedule. Once you fill our our Request Form we will contact you with next steps.
On arrival we’ll have staff ready to help unload and prepare your Transfer of Custody. From there the entire experience is identical to a full-service Business Pick-Up including three complimentary certificates (Certificate of Destruction, Certificate of Responsible Recycling, TechBack GiveBack Impact Report).
Data-Destruction & ITAD
-
Absolutely. Whether you're upgrading 10 laptops or decommissioning an entire data center, we’ll create a custom recycling plan tailored to your operational, security, and compliance needs. This can include:
➜ Pickup scheduling (single or recurring service)
➜ Chain-of-custody documentation
➜ On-site inventory or asset tagging
➜ Hard drive wiping or physical shredding
➜ Certificates of Destruction with serial tracking
➜ Custom reporting to support HIPAA, ESG, and internal audit standards
Our data destruction protocols are modeled after NAID best practices, ensuring your devices are handled with the highest care and security.
-
Yes! Protecting your data is at the core of everything we do. Every hard drive, device, and file is handled with the same protocols used by top government and enterprise ITAD programs. We don’t take shortcuts, and we don’t take trust lightly.
From chain-of-custody documentation to certified wiping or physical shredding, your data is either irrevocably erased or completely destroyed. No exceptions, no gray areas. Your privacy is our priority.
-
At TechBack, secure physical destruction is our standard approach. The heart of our enclosed ITAD processing space is our industrial dual-chamber shredder, designed specifically to permanently destroy both traditional hard drives and delicate solid-state drives, effectively turning them into robot confetti.
Shredding is the most definitive NIST-recognized form of data destruction, which is why it’s our default protocol. Because of how solid-state drives store and encrypt data, we always recommend shredding SSDs as the most reliable method of ensuring complete data destruction.
All of this will be documented in your complimentary Certificate of Data Destruction, which includes serial numbers of the assets destroyed, along with the date and destruction method used.
For organizations that require it, we also offer DoD/NIST-compliant data wiping with individual reports as a premium service. In those cases, eligible drives are securely wiped using NIST 800-88 compliant erasure tools that permanently overwrite existing data and verify successful removal, ensuring the device is fully sanitized. If a drive cannot be safely wiped (due to damage or other technical limitations), all legible details are captured before it’s sent to our industrial shredder for secure physical destruction. Our premium Certificate of Data Sanitation, which accompanies DoD/NIST-compliant data wiping, includes individual drive reports with serial numbers, erasure method, verification results, and the date each wipe was successfully completed.
Need more? Just let us know. We offer premium add-on services for a small fee, like:
• Asset-to-drive mapping
• Destruction photos or videos
• Returning shredded drive remnants
• Per-device destruction audits
• Custom compliance reporting -
Your data security is our highest priority. From the moment equipment leaves your office to the moment data is permanently destroyed, every step follows strict security procedures designed to protect sensitive information.
This is cradle to grave security at its highest standard: At TechBack, we don’t just say your data is safe. We prove it, every step of the way.1. FULL CHAIN OF CUSTODY
Every pickup begins with a Transfer of Custody Form documenting the handoff. Devices are secured on-site and transported by our fully insured team. Once your items arrive they are logged and weighed then stored in our high-security ITAD facility. At this point you’ll receive a Safe Arrival Confirmation with your signed Transfer of Custody.2. SECURE ITAD PROCESSING ZONE
Data-bearing devices are immediately placed inside our enclosed, access-controlled ITAD processing area, which is continuously monitored by security cameras.
Only authorized, trained staff can handle these materials, and every step of the intake and destruction process is documented.
3. COMPLETE DATA DESTRUCTION
Our standard method of data destruction is secure physical shredding using our industrial-grade hard drive shredder, which permanently destroys both traditional hard drives and solid-state drives.
This NIST-recognized method ensures data cannot be reconstructed or recovered.
For organizations that require it, we also offer DoD/NIST-compliant data wiping with individual reports as a premium service. Eligible drives are securely erased using certified tools that overwrite existing data and verify successful removal prior to reuse. If a drive cannot be safely wiped due to damage, encryption, or other limitations, it is automatically sent for secure shredding.
4. VERIFIED DOCUMENTATION
You’ll receive a Certificate of Data Destruction that includes:
• Serial numbers of destroyed hard drives
• The date and method of destructionFor organizations with additional compliance requirements, we also offer audit-level reporting and advanced documentation services.
-
Yes. TechBack’s data destruction and recycling process is designed around the same security and environmental frameworks used by leading IT asset disposition providers.
Our internal handling procedures follow HIPAA-compliant data protection practices, with trained staff, controlled access processing, and documented chain-of-custody from pickup through destruction.
Our destruction workflow is modeled directly after NAID operational best practices, prioritizing secure transport, restricted-access handling, and permanent physical destruction of data-bearing devices.
We also follow NIST media sanitization standards, which guide how electronic data must be permanently destroyed or erased depending on the type of device and the level of security required. Our standard protocol prioritizes NIST-recognized physical destruction, while organizations that require certified erasure can request DoD/NIST-compliant data wiping with individual audit reports.
And when it comes to recycling, TechBack works exclusively with R2-certified downstream partners, ensuring materials are dismantled and processed according to the highest environmental and data security standards.
Every TechBack job is assigned a unique job number and documented from transfer of custody through final destruction, creating an audit-ready record for internal compliance, regulatory review, and ESG reporting.
-
We got you. Every TechBack job is assigned a unique job number and includes our standard documentation package, giving you a clear record from pickup through final processing.
That includes:
Transfer of Custody Form documenting the handoff at pickup
Safe Arrival Confirmation when your equipment reaches our secure facility
Certificate of Data Destruction with serial numbers of any drives destroyed
Zero-Landfill Certificate of Recycling confirming responsible downstream processing
TechBack GiveBack Impact Report showing how many trees your recycled tech helped plant
Together, these records create a clear, audit-ready trail showing exactly how your equipment was handled from start to finish.
Need more? We also offer advanced documentation services for organizations with additional compliance or reporting needs, including:
Asset-to-Drive Mapping
Individual DoD/NIST wipe reports
ESG-ready impact reporting
Photographic destruction verification
Custom compliance documentation
We love helping companies prove their impact and protect their data so just let us know what you need and TechBack will make it happen.
-
Once your equipment arrives at our secure ITAD processing facility, you’ll receive a Safe Arrival Confirmation verifying that your materials have been received and logged into our system.
From there, all data-bearing devices are scanned and placed into secure client-designated storage lockers inside our controlled ITAD processing area. Drives remain secured in these individual holding areas until they move through our documented destruction workflow.
Our industrial shredder is operated in scheduled destruction batches, and most drives are securely destroyed and documented within a few business days of intake as part of our normal processing cycle.
If you require faster turnaround, a dedicated shredder run can be scheduled for expedited destruction. We also offer optional services such as returning shredded drive remnants or additional destruction verification for organizations with heightened compliance requirements.
-
Yes. Before dropping off or scheduling pickup for Apple devices, we ask that all Apple IDs and activation locks be removed from the device.
Apple designs its devices with extremely strong hardware-level security. Data stored on Apple devices is cryptographically tied to the device’s internal hardware and the user’s Apple ID, and in many models the storage is integrated directly into the logic board and sealed behind glued or laminated assemblies, often beneath the display glass.
Because of this design, accessing or removing internal storage is often not possible without dismantling the device in a way that destroys surrounding components and creates unnecessary safety risks. For that reason, the most reliable way to ensure proper processing is for the Apple ID to be removed before the device enters the recycling stream.
Our team will verify that devices are no longer associated with an Apple ID at intake. If you’re unsure how to remove your Apple ID or deactivate Find My Device, we’re always happy to help walk you through the process before pickup.
-
We’re always happy to host clients at TechBack and give you a behind-the-scenes look at how your equipment is handled. Visitors are welcome in our main facility areas, including our conference space and general recycling warehouse, where we can walk through the full lifecycle of your equipment and answer any questions about our process.
Because of our security protocols, entry into the enclosed ITAD data processing area is restricted to authorized staff only. This controlled access is an important part of maintaining the chain-of-custody and security standards we follow for all data-bearing devices.
That said, we’re still happy to show you how it works. We can arrange a controlled video walkthrough of the secure ITAD space, and in some cases allow guests to view the area from designated access points while our team explains the destruction process step by step.
We take security seriously, but we also believe in complete transparency, and we love giving clients a clear look at how their data is protected.
-
Because our ITAD processing area is a restricted, access-controlled security environment, we are not able to allow live viewing or virtual streaming of destruction events. This policy protects the confidentiality of all clients whose equipment may be present in the facility at any given time.
However, we understand that some organizations require visual verification of destruction for compliance or internal reporting.
For those cases, TechBack offers several premium verification services, including:
• Dedicated destruction runs scheduled specifically for your assets
• Video documentation of your destruction process
• Photographic destruction verification
• Return of shredded drive remnants if physical confirmation is requiredThese services allow companies to document and verify destruction while still maintaining the strict security controls required inside our ITAD facility.
Just let us know what your compliance requirements are, and we’ll work with you to provide the documentation you need.
-
Yes. For organizations that require certified data erasure, TechBack offers DoD and NIST-compliant data sanitization services with full audit documentation.
Our standard destruction protocol prioritizes NIST-recognized physical destruction, using our industrial dual-chamber shredder to permanently destroy both traditional hard drives and solid-state drives.
However, when sanitation is required for sustainability or compliance purposes, we also offer DoD 5220.22-M and NIST SP 800-88 Rev.1 compliant data wiping as a premium service.
Eligible drives are erased using certified data sanitization tools that overwrite existing data and verify successful removal. Each wiped device receives an individual audit report documenting:
Device serial number
Erasure method used (DoD / NIST standard)
Verification status confirming successful wipe
Date and time of the verified sanitation
This information is compiled into a Certificate of Data Sanitation, providing clear documentation for compliance, internal security policies, or regulatory audits.
Because this process requires individual device processing and reporting, DoD/NIST wiping is offered as a per-device premium service.
If you’re unsure which method your organization requires, we’re always happy to help you determine the best approach for your compliance or sustainability goals.
-
Our standard Certificate of Destruction includes the serial numbers of all destroyed hard drives, so you’ll always have formal documentation for your records.
Need a deeper level of tracking? We also offer premium audit-grade reporting that links each destroyed drive to the specific device it was removed from, including mapped asset tags, device serials, and custom categories. This service is ideal for clients with internal compliance, legal, or insurance requirements. Just let us know what you need and we’re happy to help!
-
For most organizations, our standard documentation package already provides everything needed for internal records and compliance reporting.
Every TechBack job includes serialized documentation, including a Certificate of Data Destruction listing the serial numbers of destroyed drives, along with a Zero-Landfill Certificate of Recycling confirming responsible downstream processing.
Together with your Transfer of Custody records and Safe Arrival confirmation, these documents create a clear, traceable record of how your equipment was handled from pickup through final destruction.
For organizations with additional compliance, legal, or insurance requirements, we also offer expanded audit-level documentation services. These can include:
• Asset-to-Drive Mapping
• Individual DoD/NIST wipe reports
• Custom asset categorization and tracking
• ESG-ready environmental reporting
• Photographic or video destruction verificationIf your organization has specific compliance requirements, we’re always happy to design a documentation package that fits your internal policies.
-
Of course! If you need the physical remnants of destroyed drives for compliance or peace of mind, we can securely return them for a fee. If not, we are able to safely recycle them with R2 Certified Partners.
-
Most of TechBack’s core services are already free for businesses, including equipment pickup, secure chain-of-custody handling, secure data destruction and responsible recycling. Because of that, many organizations find they don’t actually need traditional bulk pricing.
We do offer ongoing recycling plans designed around your company’s workflow. Many of our larger business clients set up scheduled service cycles, such as quarterly or biannual pickups. This keeps old equipment from piling up while ensuring data-bearing devices are handled securely as they come out of service. We also can offer dedicated TechBack collection bins placed in offices or IT departments as an add-on.
For organizations that use our premium services (such as hard drive shredding, DoD/NIST wipe reporting, or advanced documentation), our pricing is simple and transparent. We use flat per-device rates that are typically well below national ITAD providers, and often more competitive than their bulk-discount pricing.
There are no hidden fees, and all pricing is disclosed up front so you know exactly what to expect.
If your company generates electronics on a regular basis, we’re always happy to help design a simple annual recycling plan that keeps your equipment moving safely and sustainably.
Responsible Recycling
-
R2 stands for Responsible Recycling, the most current version is R2v3. It’s the leading industry certification for electronics recycling in the United States. Managed by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), R2 sets strict environmental, safety, and data security standards for how e-waste is handled, dismantled, and processed.
At TechBack, we partner exclusively with R2-certified downstream processors, so everything we collect is recycled responsibly in full alignment with our Zero Landfill Promise. To be R2-certified, our partners must:
Track every item from intake to final processing
Safely manage hazardous components like lead or mercury
Prevent illegal export or landfill dumping
Work only with vetted downstream partners
Meet rigorous environmental, health, and worker safety standards
-
TechBack is proud to be the first State-Certified Electronics Recycler in Onondaga County. We are officially registered with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) under registration number #01536.
For businesses, we’re happy to provide official documentation verifying our certification and outlining your recycling activity, including DEC compliance, certificates of destruction, and environmental impact reports. Just let us know what your organization requires, and we’ll get you everything you need.
-
Our State Certification means you can trust us: All non-reusable or broken electronics are sent to R2-certified downstream recyclers right here in the U.S. That’s a hard line for us: We do not export hazardous, non-working, or end-of-life materials. Ever. That would go against everything our Zero Landfill Promise stands for.
If and when we do send equipment overseas, it’s tested, functional, and reused, never dumped. We’re proud to help extend the life of valuable tech where it’s truly needed, while keeping waste out of landfills everywhere.
-
Good question! Most electronics are made up of materials that can be safely reclaimed and reused, like small amounts of gold, copper, aluminum, and rare earth minerals. Recycling these reduces the need for destructive mining, keeping natural resources intact and valuable resources in use.
Some components, like lead, mercury, and cadmium, are hazardous and must be carefully extracted and contained to prevent environmental harm. We work with R2-certified partners to ensure these materials are processed safely and never end up in a landfill where they can deposit toxins in our air and water.
Sadly, not every part of a device is recyclable which is why we prioritize secure reuse wherever we can. But even when disposal is necessary, we handle it responsibly and in full compliance with state and federal regulations. Nothing gets tossed casually. Every item is sorted, stripped, and processed with care.
-
Everything on our accepted item list has components that can be recycled in some form! On the off-chance we receive an item that really can’t be safely broken down, we follow NY State DEC guidelines for safe disposal.
-
Absolutely. Recycling is actually the last resort because every electronic device has a component that cannot be reclaimed. If something still works (or can be fixed) it’s better for the planet to give it a second life. At TechBack we prioritize reuse wherever possible. Devices with resale value are refurbished, and salvageable components are repurposed, supporting sustainability, helping to pay our employees, and funding our TechBack GiveBack programs where every device recycled with us plants a tree.
-
Sadly these seemingly innocuous items all contain toxic chemicals and seriously harmful metals. Their disposal is (thankfully) highly regulated in the United States to specialized facilities that can safely handle and contain potentially deadly components. If you have something in this category you don’t know what to do with we can help guide you in the right direction. Many local townships have programs to take these items to the correct place since it is so important that they not end up in local landfills!

TechBack GiveBack and ESG
-
Electronics are responsible for 70% of toxins in our landfills today. We wanted to find a way to use them to help restore some of the damage caused because the future shouldn’t come at the cost of the planet. Turning old tech into new life is the kind of impact we’re here for, tackling two environmental challenges at once: e-waste and deforestation.
Through our partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects, recycling with us helps to rebuild ecosystems in some of the world’s most critically deforested areas. It’s a tangible way to offset the environmental footprint of the electronics we love and depend on, transforming something discarded into something living, rooted, and restorative. -
Working or salvageable components recycled through TechBack are what power our program, allowing us to promise one tree planted for every device (working or not) that we receive. There’s nothing extra you need to do. Just recycle with us (for free!) and we’ll handle the rest. If you're a business, you'll receive a TechBack GiveBack Report outlining your impact, including how many trees your organization helped plant.
-
Through our partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects trees are planted in some of the world’s most critically deforested areas like Haiti, Madagascar, Nepal, and beyond. These aren’t symbolic saplings. They’re native species planted by local communities in regions where reforestation helps restore entire ecosystems, prevent flooding, protect wildlife, and create stable jobs. One tree at a time we can turn your tech into real, rooted change.

Yes! We provide a Techback GiveBack report for all of our business clients. At the moment we are unable to provide individual GiveBack reports for every individual drop-off. Please sign up for updates on impact tracking and community progress.
-
Nope. We’re small, transparent, and mission-driven company who is in this business because we hate greenwashing. There are no hidden fees or fluffy promises, just responsible recycling and real trees in the ground.
-
Not directly but every item recycled through techback supports this. Our working items can end up in schools and start-ups around the world, and every item we are able to resell supports our TechBack GiveBack program. Rest assured your device is ending up in good hands.
-
Yes! Every business that recycles with TechBack receives a TechBack GiveBack Report at no cost. It shows how many trees your team helped plant and outlines the positive environmental impact of your recycling efforts.
For companies with formal ESG, CSR, or sustainability initiatives (go you!), we also offer custom reporting as a premium service. This can include:
Aggregated device data and/or diversion volumes
Quarterly tracking with regularly scheduled pick-ups
Estimated carbon impact
Asset recovery/resale totals
Tailored language or formats for your internal reporting
If you have specific documentation or audit requirements, just let us know. We would love to work with your sustainability team.
-
We would love that! We go out of our way to make your recycling experience something you would love to share and try to provide everything you would need with our free service. But if you require anything else just ask and we’ll see what we can do.
About Us
-
We’re a small but mighty team who grew frustrated with the broken state of electronics recycling: overpriced vendors, confusing systems, and almost zero transparency.
After years of working with companies across industries, our founders saw firsthand how much retired technology businesses were forced to stockpile simply because secure recycling and destruction options were so difficult to access.
So we built something better. TechBack combines secure ITAD processing, documented chain-of-custody protocols, and R2-certified downstream recycling into a system designed to make responsible electronics recycling simple, transparent, and accessible.
We’re local, impact-first, and focused on making the right thing the easy thing for everyone with the high level of security their tech deserves.
-
We’re not just another warehouse operation. TechBack is proud to be the first state-certified electronics recycling facility in Onondaga County, officially registered with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
But certification is only the beginning. We built TechBack around a purpose-designed ITAD processing environment that prioritizes security, transparency, and responsible recycling at every step.
All data-bearing devices enter our enclosed, access-controlled ITAD processing space, where they are logged into our chain-of-custody system, secured in client-designated storage lockers, and processed through our industrial dual-chamber hard drive shredder designed to permanently destroy both traditional hard drives and solid-state drives.
Every job is tracked from transfer of custody through final destruction and recycling, generating serialized documentation including Certificates of Data Destruction, Zero-Landfill Recycling, and TechBack GiveBack impact reporting.
And when it comes to recycling, we work exclusively with R2-certified downstream partners, ensuring materials are responsibly reused or dismantled through the highest environmental and data security standards.
We’re fully insured, locally registered, and obsessed with doing this the right way. No shortcuts, no shady backdoors, and absolutely no landfill dumping. When you recycle with TechBack, you know exactly where your equipment goes and exactly how your data was destroyed.
-
Our free recycling services are funded through responsible materials recovery and the secure reuse of eligible equipment.
When electronics are properly processed, many contain valuable recoverable materials or components that can be safely refurbished and reintroduced into the supply chain. By handling this process in a structured, environmentally responsible way, we’re able to fund our operations while keeping recycling accessible to businesses that need secure disposal.
That allows us to offer Accessible Recycling, our free core service designed to prioritize environmental impact and secure data destruction rather than charging businesses high recycling fees.
Some clients also choose optional premium services, such as advanced audit reporting, DoD/NIST-certified wiping, or custom destruction documentation. Those services help support the free recycling program while providing additional compliance tools for organizations that need them.
And we take it one step further. Every device we process contributes to TechBack GiveBack, our reforestation initiative that funds the planting of trees through our partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects. It’s our way of turning electronic waste into long-term environmental impact.
-
We care deeply. This isn’t a side project or a gimmick. It’s our full-time mission. Our headquarters are fully outfitted in recycled materials, and our employees are trained in sustainable action. We built TechBack because we believe everyone deserves a recycling solution that’s safe, trustworthy, and good for the planet. We show up every day to make that real.
-
Recycle with us. Tell your friends. Mention us to your office manager, realtor, accountant, lawyer, or doctor. And if you had a good experience, leave us a review.
For a small local company, positive reviews are one of the most powerful ways to help others discover that secure electronics recycling even exists. Every review helps more businesses find a safe, responsible alternative to throwing devices in the trash.
We’re building something new in an industry that badly needs change, and every bit of support helps us go further. Most people don’t even realize electronics recycling is an easy and accessible option (we’ve heard horror stories of laptops in garbage cans). Devices shouldn’t sit in closets forever, and they definitely shouldn’t end up in landfills.
We’re working to help our communities understand that every device safely recycled creates real impact in the world, and we’d love your help spreading the word.
